Wednesday, January 9, 2019 Gen 28-31; Prov 4; Matt 8

Matthew 8: What do the man with leprosy and the centurion have in common? In verse 28, how was Jesus ultimately received?

Genesis 28: Who was Jacob sent to marry? Who did Esau marry and why?

Genesis 29: What did Rachel do (what was she responsible for)?  Take some time today and consider writing down the names of each of the children born to Leah and Rachel – these will become the twelve tribes of Israel.

Genesis 30: What similarity do you find between Rachel and Sarah?  How did Jacob outsmart his uncle Laban?

Genesis 31:  Where did Jacob get his idea about accumulating the striped and spotted livestock?  What did Rachel take from her father and where did she hide it?

Matthew 8: What do the man with leprosy and the centurion have in common? In verse 28, how was Jesus ultimately received?

Journal Prompt: In what area of your life and walk with the Lord might Jesus say “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” (Matthew 8:26)

Answers

Genesis 28: Jacob was sent to marry a daughter of Laban.  Esau married Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael.

Genesis 29: She was a shepherdess.

Genesis 30:Rachel and Sarah both failed to trust the Lord and they found servants to sleep with (and become concubines to) their husbands so that they could ‘have’ an heir. Jacob outsmarted Laban by an unusual system of encouraging spotted, speckled, and striped livestock.  I’m not really sure how this worked, but Jacob became prosperous and had larger and healthier flocks than his uncle.

Genesis 31:  God told him in a dream.  She took the household idols – perhaps because she saw them as valuable items that were something of an inheritance, but perhaps because she continued to worship pagan Gods.

Matthew 8: They believed that Jesus had the power to heal them. The leper said “Lord, if you will you can make me clean.” and the centurion said, “Only say the word and my servant will be healed.”
