Wednesday, January 29: Genesis 47-48; Psalm 25; Gal 3

Genesis 47: In addition to allowing the brothers to live in Goshen, what else did the Pharaoh request? As the famine continued, what was Joseph’s plan?  What was Jacob’s dying wish?

Genesis 48: Before dying, what did Jacob do?  What extra gift did God give Joseph?

Galatians 3: How did the Old Testament prophesy that God would justify the Gentiles by faith? (v 8)

Journal Prompt:  Write out verses 6-7 and reflect upon them.  What does it mean to be an heir and what do we stand to inherit?

ANSWERS

Genesis 47: The Pharaoh asked them to be in charge of his own livestock. (v.6)

Apparently Joseph’s plan was to first sell the food, then when the Egyptians ran out of money, Joseph took their livestock in exchange for food, then he took their fields in exchanged for food and then he made them work the fields – he provided seed, but  one fifth of the crops were to be given to Pharaoh.  He reduced the people to servitude. (v. 21)

Jacob’s wish was to not be buried in Egypt, but for his body to be taken to Canaan.

Genesis 48: Before dying, Jacob blessed Joseph’s sons Ephraim and Manasseh and he counted them as his own sons in terms of inheritors.  Basically he gave Joseph a double inheritance.

God gave Joseph extra land. (one more ridge).

Galatians 3: For the answer to this question, you have to go back to Genesis 12:3; 18:8; 22:18. “ All nations on earth will be blessed because you have obeyed me. Genesis 22:18). – God speaking to Abraham.
