Journal Prompt: Consider the seven woes in Matthew 23. How can you be like a Pharisee?
Answers:
Exodus 25: God commanded Moses to make all of the articles that would be used in the Tabernacle: The ark of the covenant, the mercy seat, two cherubim of gold, and a golden lampstand.
Exodus 26: The curtains were to be made of goat hair; the coverings of rams and goats’ skins. The Most Holy Place was to have the ark, the mercy seat, the cherubim
Matthew 23: Jesus accused the Pharisees of:
- Not practicing what they preached
- Making the people carry heavy burdens (rules and regulations) that they themselves do not observe.
- Doing deeds for show – so others will see them.
- Dress as if they are very righteous (phylacteries and tassels)
- Putting themselves first: sit in best seats at feasts and in the synagogue
- Excluding their people from heaven because of their teaching
- Going to great distances to get converts – and they lead them astray
- Being very fastidious about their tithing – even to the extent of tithing spices, yet neglecting justice, mercy and faithfulness
- Presenting themselves as perfect when in fact they are filled with greed and self-indulgence.
- Being hypocrites -they claim to be more righteous than their forefathers who killed prophets, yet they do the exact same thing
