Proverbs 4–5; Galatians 4:21–31
Solomon provides valuable instruction for his son. It seems to me that he compiled these sayings over a lifetime as he himself sought wisdom. I look at Proverbs as advice Solomon wishes he would have followed, and so this speaks to my heart. If I could sit down and put together a letter for my children, how much of it would be based on the mistakes I made in life. I think of all the times, I had choices to make, and I failed to make the best choice. In retrospect, it seems so clear, yet at the time I was following my desire, my pleasure, my selfish inclination.
Some of these proverbs make so much sense, and others seem rather strange, but when I try to picture these through the eyes of someone who has made mistakes, these sayings make a lot of sense.
Now that I am over 60, I tend to look to Jesus rather than myself, and I hope that I am making better choices than I did when I was younger! But I still need to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide my paths and to truly seek the Lord in all that I do and say!
Maybe I’ll write a letter to my children, although I have shared my wisdom with them many times, and they seem to prefer to learn things the hard way! I guess they are more like me than I would like! But I just love them so, even when they don’t follow my advice!!
Thank you, Jesus, for the gift that my children are to me. Help me provide guidance and wisdom and to trust You to work in their lives!
