Monday 24-June 2 Chron 4-6; Job 20; 1 Cor 14

2 Chronicles 4: For what purpose were the basins and the sea?  What supported the ‘sea’?

2 Chronicles 5: What happened after they dedicated the Temple and praised God?

2 Chronicles 6: In verses 22-39, what is Solomon assuming will happen?

1 Corinthians 14:  What do you learn in this chapter about the gift of speaking in tongues? What gifts should the people in the church seek to excel?

Answers:

2 Chronicles 4: The basins were to wash off the burnt offerings, and the sea was for the priests to wash in. The sea was supported by 12 oxen: three facing north, three facing west, three facing south, and three facing east. The sea was set on them, and all their rear parts were inward:

2 Chronicles 5:  After the Temple was dedicated and the Israelites praised God the Temple was filled with a cloud of the glory of the Lord.

2 Chronicles 6:  In Solomon’s prayer to God, he assumes the Israelites (himself included) would sin against the Lord, and he prayed that after recognizing their sin, they would repent and return to the Temple to seek forgiveness and restoration

1 Corinthians 14:  “Tongues” is a language that is spoken between individuals and God. It doesn’t edify others, it edifies the one speaking in tongues.  If there is no tranlator present then they should not speak in tongues in church.  He parallels this with speaking a foreign language.  What good would it be to speak Chinese in church if no one in the congregation understands.  It would serve no purpose. They should seek to excel in gifts that edify others such as prophesy.
