Monday 1-April Joshua 7-8; Eccl 4:7-16; John 7

Joshua 7:What was Joshua’s reaction when the soldiers were defeated at Ai and why? What was the consequence for the sin of Achan?

Joshua 8: How did Joshua defeat Ai and how was Joshua misled?

Eccl 4:7-16: What is better than one and why?

John 7: How does Jesus defend His healing on the Sabbath in this chapter? How were the people divided with regard to Jesus? Who stood up for Jesus?

Journal Prompt: In John 7:48 Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water”.  You believe in Jesus, what does this verse mean to you?

Joshua 7:  Joshua prayed to God and complained that He had not given them victory. Joshua did not know that some men had taken idols when they pillaged Jericho. Achan sinned by taking plunder from Jericho and he was stoned and burned.

Joshua 8:  The Israelites pretended to be losing and fleeing, so the inhabitants of Ai left their city and pursued them – then the remaining Israelites ambushed them and took the city.

Joshua was misled by some men from Gibeon who pretended to be from a distant country claiming to come to the Israelites because they wanted to serve their God.  Joshua and the Israelites made a covenant with them without consulting wtih God.

Ecclesiastes 4: 7-16:  Two is better than one, because if you fall, you can be lifted up.  If you are cold, you can be warmed, and you are less likely to be attached (both literally and figuratively)

John 7:  Jesus says that His healing on the Sabbath was no different than the circumcisions performed on the Sabbath – those were done to  heal the spirit and He was healing the whole body.

Some Jews thought he was the Prophet, others said He was the Messiah, others were unsure because He came from Galilee and they thought the Christ would come from Bethlehem. Nicodemus stood up for Jesus in front of the Pharisees.
