Isaiah 7: Who was king in this chapter? Why did Ahaz not want to ask for a sign from God? What was the sign?
Philippians 1: Why does Paul rejoice?
Journal Prompt: “Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ”, re-read verses 27-30. What does this exhortation mean to you?
Answers:
Isaiah 7: Ahaz was king, the grandson of Uzziah (remember that the events of chapter 6 took place during the year that Uzziah died.)
Ahaz did not want to test the Lord.
The sign was Immanuel – Lord with us – that a baby would be born to a virgin.
Philippians 1: Paul rejoices because the Philippians are in
partnership with Paul, and he knows that the work that God began in them will
be brought to completion on the day Jesus returns. (v. 5-6). Paul also rejoices that the gospel of
Jesus is preached regardless of the motivation (v. 18). He rejoices for their
prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus in his deliverance (v. 19).
