Wednesday, March 18 Deuteronomy 1-3; Psalm 36; Luke 5

Essentially, the Book of Deuteronomy is a sermon – or a series of sermons, preached by Moses to Israel, and preached with a heavy and passionate heart.

Deuteronomy 1 & 2: What is Moses reminding the Israelites about?

Deuteronomy 3: Where was the land that belonged to the kings Og and Sihon? What special note is included about Og’s lineage?Who setttled there? Who received the Dead Sea (Sea of salt)?  Did Moses accept God’s declaration that he would not be permitted to enter the Promised Land?

Luke 5: How many disciples did Jesus call in this chapters? What miracles did Jesus perform? What did he command the healed to do? What issue was brought up in verse 33?

Journal Prompt:

Deuteronomy 1&2:  After defeating Kings Og and Sihon, Moses reminds the Israelites of God’s faithfulness and love, but also of God’s wrath on the previous generation of Israelites because of their rebellion. Repeatedly he charges Israel to keep the Law. Deuteronomy is a solemn call to love and obey the one true God.

Deuteronomy 3:  The land that belonged to Og and Sihon was  east of the Jordan River. Og was the only remnant of the Rephaim (an ancient race of giants: They are described generally as being between 7 and 10 feet tall and are called “mighty men. They were first referenced in Genesis 14:5.)  If you are interested in reading more about the Rephaim, here is a good explanation: https://www.gotquestions.org/Rephaim.html

The tribes of Reuben and Gad received the ‘territory beginning at Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities.’  The other half of Gilead and the ‘kingdom of Og, that is, all the region of Argob’ was given to the tribe of Manasseh. (from vs 12-17)

The Reubenites and the Gadites received the territory including the Dead Sea.

Moses tells them that at the time when God told him he would not lead the people into the promised land, he (Moses) pleaded with God, but God did not grant his prayer. (this took place in Numbers 20).

Luke 5: Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Levi (Matthew). Jesus healed a leper who he told to tell no one, but commanded him to present himself to the priests and make an offering for his cleansing (as we just read in Leviticus 14 last week). He healed the paralytic, who was brought in by his friends through the roof.  He forgave the man his sins and commanded him to pick up his bed and go home. This miracle was done in the presence of many.  Jesus was asked why his disciples didn’t fast since the John the Baptist’s disciples and the Pharisees fasted.
