Exodus 1: What led to the oppression of the Hebrews?

Exodus 2: What tribe was Moses from? Who was his mother?  Why did Moses flee and where did he go?

Exodus 3: How long was Moses in the wilderness? What two names for Himself did God give Moses?

Galatians 5: What happens when someone tries to be justified by the Law?  What is the only thing that counts? (v.6)  What does Paul wish upon those who are teaching the Galatians to return to the Law and be circumcised?

Journal Prompt:  How do you walk by the Spirit and keep in step with the Spirit?  Are you doing this?

Journal Prompt:  God tells Moses that He is to refer to Him as “I Am” – think about how Jesus identified Himself as “I Am” . (John 8:58 Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”)  Write about the magnitude of the claim Jesus was making and what it means to you.

ANSWERS

Exodus 1: The Jews were so fruitful that the Egyptians began to fear that if a war broke out, they would join the enemy and side against Egypt and leave Egypt. (v. 10)

Exodus 2: Moses was from the tribe of the Levites.  His mother had his sister place him in a basket in the Nile River to avoid being killed as the Pharaoh had ordered. Moses’ ‘mother’ was the daughter of the Pharaoh who found the baby.  He fled because he had killed an Egyptian slave master who was beating a Hebrew slave, and Pharaoh was trying to kill him.  He fled to Midian where he lived with Reuel (later known as Jethro). He married Reuel’s daughter, Ziporah.  (Sephora in French) and had a son named Gershom.

Exodus 3: Moses was in the wilderness a ‘long time’ (2:23).  “I am” and “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” were the two names God gave to Moses to use when referring to Him.

Galatians 5: When someone tries to find justification through the Law, they are alienating themselves from Christ.  The only thing that counts is ‘faith expressing itself through love.” (v.6).  Paul was so angry at those who were trying to convince the Galatians of the need to be circumcised, that they should emasculated themselves! (v. 12).  Can you imagine listening to the letter as it was read in public??!!

Jesus used the same phrase “I AM” in seven declarations about Himself. In all seven, He combines I AM with tremendous metaphors which express His saving relationship toward the world. All appear in the book of John. They are I AM the Bread of Life (John 6:35, 41, 48, 51); I AM the Light of the World (John 8:12); I AM the Door of the Sheep (John 10:7, 9); I AM the Good Shepherd (John 10:11,14); I AM the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25); I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6); and I AM the True Vine (John 15:1, 5).
