Tuesday 28-May 1 Kings 19-20; Ps 68; Rom 7

1 Kings 19: Why was Elijah fleeing?  Where did he go?  How was he provided for? What did the Lord command him?

1 Kings 20: Which verses speak to you of Ahab’s character?

Romans 7: Is the Law bad? What purpose does it serve?

Journal Prompt:  How does Paul contrast the life in the Law and life in the Spirit?

Answers:

1 Kings 19: Elijah was fleeing from Jezebel who threatened to kill him for having killed the 450 priests of Baal.  He went first to Beersheba then a days journey into the wilderness.  An angel provided bread and water for two days and then he went to Mt. Horeb (a 40 day journey) and stayed in a cave.  He was commanded to anoint Hazael as king of Syria, Jehu as king of Israel and Elisha as his successor.

1 Kings 20: Ahab seems to have been a very weak king. He was willing to let Ben Hadad take whatever he wanted without putting up a fight.  Then, after the Lord gave Ben Hadad into his hands, he released him.

Romans 7: The Law is good – it is Holy, but we cannot fulfill all the commandments – so we cannot be made righteous through observing the Law.  But the Law, the commandments, indicate what sin is.  Before having a relationship with Jesus, righteousness is not possible because no one is capable of not sinning.
