Second Union Church recognizes the season of Lent as we celebrate Ash Wednesday with a special service including the anointing of the burnt ashes.
This evening we gather together as a church to mark the beginning of this season of waiting and renewal. We are marked, too, on this day. A cross on the forehead, made with ashes, reminds us both who we are (‘Remember that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return,’ in the words of Genesis 3) and whose we are—we belong to the one who died on the cross and in whose ashes we find new birth.
